Exelauno, continued

On Thursday the School celebrated its most idiosyncratic holiday, Exelauno Day, Roxbury Latin's annual celebration of the classics. The tradition began over fifty years ago with classics teacher Clarence Gleason, as a pun on the Greek verb exelauno, meaning "to march forth." On that day, Latin and Greek students were excused from homework, and students declaimed passages in Latin and in Greek. Since 1957, the competition has been an annual schoolwide celebration. As "March Fourth" falls on a Sunday this year, on March 1 the School celebrated an early Exelauno Day with an entertaining and impressive program of student declamations in Latin and in Greek. In three close contests, the judges determined Dhimitris Lefteri (Lower School Latin), Amir Ameri (Upper School Latin), and Michael Wharton (Greek) to be the prize-winning declaimers. Congratulations to all of the Exelauno Declaimers!

Later in the evening, alumni celebrated the holiday at the 2nd Annual Exelauno Pub Night. Nearly 50 alumni gathered at Brandy Pete's in Boston to reconnect and share their favorite memories of the day.
